It is important to test the quality of plastics before using raw plastics for manufacturing any product. One of the important properties of the plastic is its brittleness. Brittles is a property of plastic material which is hard & rigid but at the same time it has little tensile strength. If a product has brittleness or tensile strength, it means it will be resistant to the tension forces. This means the product will not break in certain tensile forces.
How to test the brittleness of Plastics?
The best way to determine the brittleness of the plastics is to perform an Izod Impact Test. The test helps to understand the quality of the base resin.
Base resin is a synthesized molecular polymer. This is the basic raw material utilized in the construction of plastics. The base resin is about 30% to 60% of the entire composition of plastic. The Izod test helps the manufacturers to decide how much resin is mandatory to be used for a sample. The IZOD impact test is widely used because it is quick and runs on lower temperatures. It is also easy to evaluate the quality of the plastics.
The impact test helps to examine the energy per unit thickness. To measure the same, it is important to first break a sample with a determined standard impact. To break the sample, you need to make the notches in the sample. The standard methods for creating a notch in a sample can be found in a few national and international test standards. Let’s read in short about these:
1. ISO 148: This international standard test method explains the process to perform Izod Impact test. The standard helps you determine the strength of metallic materials to absorb impact energy.
2. ASTM E23: This American national standard test defines the notch impact.
3. EN 10045: The European Standard test defines the charpy impact test to test the iron and steel casting samples.
Measuring the brittleness of plastics can also be done by Charpy Impact Tester. A material which is brittle in nature absorbs less energy before it gets fractured. But you should also remember the fact that, when a material absorbs the maximum impact, it can either crack, break, or get deformed.
Till now, we have learnt the major property of plastic, a few important standards that help to perform the impact test. Now we’ll discuss how the tests can be performed.
How is Izod / Charpy Impact Testing Done?
The best way to perform the impact testing is to use an Izod/Charpy impact tester. The testing machine is capable of performing both the tests using a single test machine. In the Izod test, you need to make a V-notch cut in the sample which is known as the stress concentration zone. The arm of the machine is raised at predefined height and then released to create an impact on the sample and hence, to measure the toughness/impact resistance strength of a material. The energy is measured by kj/m2. This is how the Izod impact tester works.
