Why do we need to perform a ring crush test if we have already performed ECT?

With box compression tests in use and a common practice among cardboard manufacturers, there are very few who might be even using the ECT method which is Edge Crush Tester. In such a culture we can least expect people to know or apply the other versions of ECT - The Ring Crush Tester Method. But it is very important to know that if you are already using the ECT method then also it is necessary that RCT is used to assess the complete quality of the carton boards. Let us read more about how both tests are different and what aspects they examine so that their importance in ensuring future product safety and bringing quality is understood.

How ECT is different from RCT?
Edge Crush Tester tests the strength of the edges of the cardboard. It analyses the resistance of the board to the external force that is applied perpendicular to its edges. This way one can recreate the scenarios where the carton might be stacked, transported or stored for a long time.

However, the Ring Crust Tester tests the resistance of the cardboard to compressive force that is parallel and perpendicular both to its edges. This test can help recreate the pressure a carton can have from products kept inside them.

On one side where testing ECT ensures how long a box can withstand stacking pressure while maintaining its structure, and on the other side RCT tells how the box will protect the stuff packed inside it under load or pressure. So hence one is required to evaluate the edge resistance strength and another tells the overall compressive strength, therefore both are crucial for producing a good product that is trusted by all cardboard box manufacturers.
