What is the Coefficient of Friction Test?
Coefficient of friction Tester or COF test is the best testing or inspecting solution for a wide range of applications. Whether you want to test a paper board coating, a plastic peel, a polymer or corrugated paperboard, the test will help you understand the grips, frictional or the sliding properties of the material. The best way to perform the COF test is using a testing equipment known as Coefficient of friction tester.
The COF testing equipment helps you perform the peel test, friction sliding test, and many more. At Pacorr Testing Instruments, we have the best coefficient of friction test equipment for your materials. Not only the COF tester, with our range of testing instruments we assure to deliver efficient and reliable test machines that meet all industry standards.
Continuing the discussion, let’s dig deep into the specifications and features of pacorr’s coefficient of friction testing instruments.
As per the book of standards, the COF test method is used to determine two types of friction of films and plastic coatings i.e. Static Friction and Kinetic Friction. The procedure of both the tests is clearly mentioned in the book of standards such as ASTM D1894. The testing equipment involves using a stationary slider with a moving plane or a moving slider with a stationary plane when calculating the friction. Choosing the type of test completely depends on the type of test that you want to perform.
Let’s now understand how actually the coefficient of friction tester works
Coefficient of friction tester is used to find out the results of the paper and packaging substrates when they are rubbed against each other. This type of test is performed on a wide range of packaging material. It is a highly standardized and straightforward method of determining the starting and moving resistance of one surface that is being dragged on the surface of the other one and this can be calculated in both static and kinetic state of friction.
In static COF testing, a slider is placed on the surface that is being tested and the amount of force needed to move the slider is measured. It is then divided by the weight of the slider to give a COF calculation and the rating of the COF.
For kinetic coefficient of tests, a slider is used and the result is calculated by working out the average force needed during uniform sliding of the surfaces, divided by the sliding weight.
Why is the coefficient of friction testing so important?
Testing the coefficient of friction tester is a crucial part to check if the material is good to be used during the manufacturing process or as part of a product’s packaging. It can also indicate how well-coated corrugated or paper packaging material is and will stand up with the tough handling, shipping and sales.
