FAQs on Determining the Impact Strength of Plastics

There are many questions that arise in the minds of customers when it comes to an IZOD / Charpy Impact tester. To end your search here, we have collected answers of some frequently asked questions that will help you to test the specimen accurately using IZOD Impact Tester. The blog also covers a few basic queries regarding what is impact strength test, what is the difference between Izod Impact and Charpy Impact test and so on. Let’s dig in.

What is an Impact Strength Test?

Impact test is performed on the plastics by the manufacturers to determine the toughness or impact resistance strength of the material. The test also helps to examine how much amount of pressure or energy a material can absorb when subjected to different conditions.

How can an impact strength test be performed?

The best way to perform the impact strength or Izod/Charpy Impact test is by using a high-quality and standardized testing machine i.e. IZOD impact Tester. The machine is designed to evaluate the impact resistance strength of the plastics.

How does the testing machine work?

The IZOD impact tester works on a pendulum method that helps to measure the toughness and strength of a plastic material. This pendulum has hammers on both sides. Under certain conditions, the specimen is placed horizontally or vertically, depending on the test requirements. During the test, the hammer of the pendulum gets striked on the sample to test its strength.

What is the difference between the IZOD & Charpy Impact test?

Izod and Charpy are two different methods to examine the impact strength of plastics using the same testing machine. The major difference between both the tests is the process of preparing the sample and placing it in a testing machine.

To perform the IZOD test, the user needs to create a notch in the sample considering the defined depth & measurement. Once done, keep the sample in the testing machine. The sample is kept vertically, with the notch facing the pendulum. Fix the pendulum at a defined height and then release on the specimen with full force. The Impact absorbed by the plastic material defines its quality.

In the Charpy Impact test, the process remains the same but the specimen is placed horizontally with the notch facing away from the pendulum.

The Last Word

Although there is some difference in performing the IZOD test and charpy test, you can make use of a single testing machine to perform both the tests.
