Calculate MFI of Polymer Using Advanced Technology Melt Flow Index Tester

Pacorr testing instruments is one of Asia's topmost leading manufacturers in supplying quality testing lab equipment worldwide. We always try to provide you solution driven lab equipment to improve the quality of the material to its apex.

Polymer industry is facing numerous problems like deformation of product, low melting point of polymer, inefficient process ability, inconsistent product quality, and deterioration in mechanical and thermal properties, inappropriate material selection, compliance risks, inefficient costing and ineffective mass production. By just analyzing parameters like melt flow index we can easily determine molecular weight, process applicability, viscosity, mechanical strength, and the optimum temperature with respect to standardized time.

The properties of polymers can be easily tested by meticulously designed melt flow index tester following all the industrial and international standardized guidelines. A particular amount of weight of granules poured into the heating barrel and then molten polymer flow through the orifice capillary within a time frame is observed. The manufacturer can precisely measure the MFI by evaluating the various properties of polymers.

We will particularly discuss the calculation of MFI in this blog. But before calculating the formula for MFI we need to go through the basic principle of a melt flow index tester.

PRINCIPLE OF MFI OR MFR
Melt flow index (MFI) or Melt flow rate (MFR) tester is used to precisely measure the flow ability of thermo sets. A particular amount of granules in grams is poured into the heated barrel where it gets heated up to the 190 degree Celsius temperature and within the time limit of 10 minutes. As the granules are melted by a weighing machine equipped in the MFI tester, the load will be accurately measured and displayed on the on load indicator on the digital panel. It is facilitated with an auto cut of the molten metal. The result we get is used to analyze process ability, viscosity, molecular weight and process ability. The value obtained is expressed in terms of
g/10 min.

You can read the challenges to evaluate Melt Flow Index for testing PVC granules to get information in detail of its processing in polymer manufacturing industry. To ease your challenges during manufacturing of polymer based products, Pacorr provides you two models of melt flow tester in which one is semi manual and other one is fully automatic model.

CALCULATION OF OF MELT FLOW INDEX
For the calculation of melt flow rate or melt flow index, the polymer manufacturers can effectively use it

Flow rate = (600/t X weight of extruded granules)

t = time of extrudate in seconds

Melt flow rate = g/10 min

By using a melt flow formula a researcher or a manufacturer in a polymer industry can easily regulate the melt flow test. This test ensures not only accuracy but also the production of quality products.

Ultimately, amalgamating melt flow index testing into the polymer manufacturing process will enhance the consistent quality, reliability and durability of the product. The information obtained will help in formulating the optimized process and to pre-decide process applicability and material selection in the polymer manufacturing industry.

Pacorr melt flow index tester plays an important role in the polymer manufacturing industry. Our technical expertise has precisely designed this lab testing equipment to sort out polymer processing challenges.
